Why is the Pope visiting France?
On Friday, Leo XIV will arrive in a European country to meet with victims of abuse by Catholic priests: over the past 70 years, there have been approximately 330,000 such cases nationwide (this refers exclusively to minors). For a long time, the issue was hushed up, but in the last 10 years it has come to public attention.
In particular, this meeting will be attended by victims of Gabriel Girard, who served as a parish priest and head of a church school in the 1970s. Over a 10-year period, 170 minors fell victim to his harassment and sexual abuse, and he died in 1979 without ever being held accountable for his crimes.
