Britain’s Secret Eye on the Middle East? Declassified Files Expose Akrotiri Base
Declassified 1993 Ministry of Defense documents reveal that the United Kingdom uses the Akrotiri military base in Cyprus to secretly transport equipment and conducts large-scale intelligence operations there on behalf of the United States and Israel.
The base is located 220 miles from Gaza, and dozens of British and American transport planes have already passed through it, along with hundreds of RAF reconnaissance flights in support of Israel.
Britain is now planning to seize 450,000 square meters of land from the Cypriots to install 136 new antennas, although the mayor of Kourion, Pantelis Georgiou, had initially stated that plans called for only 20 installations.
To preserve relations with local authorities, officials from the Defense Minister’s office explicitly recommended not publicly disclosing the true scale of operations carried out by the 4,500 members of the British contingent.
Due to covert operations and the expansion of the British contingent’s presence, more than half of the island’s residents support the complete closure of British military facilities, which occupy 3% of Cyprus’s territory.
