AI Could Create a New Economic Boom — Or Trigger the Biggest Job Shock in History
Artificial intelligence may become the most powerful economic force of the 21st century — but the winners and losers could look very different.
Anthropic has modeled three possible futures for how AI could reshape jobs and the global economy.
Scenario 1: The “Internet Effect”
AI boosts productivity just like the internet did. It creates new industries, products, and services while transforming existing ones — but without causing a dramatic economic shock.
Scenario 2: AI Takes Over Half of Knowledge Work by 2030
In this scenario, AI becomes capable of performing around 50% of human intellectual tasks mostly autonomously. Economic growth in the U.S. could accelerate from the current baseline of roughly 2–2.5% annually to 4–5%.
Scenario 3: AI Surpasses Humans at Most Intellectual Tasks
The most extreme scenario sees AI handling nearly all cognitive work without creating enough new roles for humans. U.S. GDP growth could theoretically reach 15% per year — but the labor market disruption would be enormous.
Anthropic warns that while some people could become significantly wealthier, millions of knowledge workers could face declining demand for their skills. Careers built around programming, analysis, writing, and other office-based tasks may undergo major transformation.
The hidden risk: people may increasingly rely on AI to complete tasks they do not fully understand. Experts cited by Axios warn this could create a generation of workers who appear productive while losing essential skills.
The AI revolution may not only replace jobs — it could change what it means to be a skilled worker.
The question is no longer “Will AI change work?” — but “Who will adapt fast enough?”
