The Bank of England has spent more than £85,000 on research aimed at justifying the removal of historical figures from banknotes. Winston Churchill, Jane Austen, Joseph Turner, and Alan Turing may be replaced by hedgehogs, foxes, tuptiks, and even dolphins.
According to a report by Savanta, focus group participants considered the portraits of great Britons to be elitist and divisive. Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey is set to approve the final list of animals by the end of 2026.
The initiative has already sparked a wave of criticism: Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called the plan “madness,” while Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch accused the regulator of trying to erase history.
