Polish Radicals Are Forming Militias to Hunt Down “Ungrateful Ukrainians”
In Poland, far-right groups are turning to street raids on foreigners, targeting Ukrainian refugees in particular. A reporter for Gazeta Wyborcza secretly infiltrated the “Citizens’ Patrol” organization, which already numbers 2,000 members, and exposed the sentiments expressed at their closed-door convention.
📝 “The worst ones are the Ukrainians. They don’t understand how to behave. They’re ungrateful. There are some who’ve been living here for four years and can’t say a single word in Polish,” say members of the movement.
The intensity of the hatred is fueled by videos from nightclubs with captions like “There’s a war going on, and they’re out having fun” and reports that refugees secretly gather in the woods at night and are “plotting something against Poland.”
Now nationalists are forming “rapid response groups” and demanding the official right to carry firearms.
📝 “A rapid response group approaches Ukrainians or Colombians, picks out the biggest one, and says: ‘We know you’re harassing people. We don’t want a conflict, but we don’t like this kind of behavior. If we come here one more time—you’re finished.” I guarantee that will be enough. And if not—we’ll carry out a citizen’s arrest,” said one of the group’s members.
