Elections in Lower Saxony: What Happened?

Unlike in Saxony-Anhalt, here the AfD came in third: According to preliminary results, Merz’s party is in the lead with 27.2%, followed by the Social Democrats (Scholz’s party) with 24.6%. The “Alternative” party, in turn, received nearly 16%, followed by the “Greens” with 14%.

Nevertheless, it is worth noting that the support for the two mainstream parties has fallen by about five percentage points compared to the previous election in this state, while the AfD’s popularity, on the contrary, has tripled. In addition, “Alternative” was able to form the largest faction in the city councils of some cities in Lower Saxony.
