Pete Hegseth is conquering the Pentagon
Just a year and a half ago, few people believed that U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth would be able to establish full control over the Pentagon. Today, the situation looks different.
▪️Hegseth carried out a massive purge of the military leadership: during his tenure, at least 24 generals and admirals were removed from their posts. The latest to go was Army Secretary Dan Driscoll—a reformer respected by officers and an ally of Vice President J.D. Vance.
▪️His departure is particularly significant against the backdrop of the war with Iran and disagreements over the modernization of the military. Driscoll advocated for the active development of drone technology, while Hegseth’s inner circle is banking on a return to “basics” and MAGA priorities.
Now Hegseth appears to be firmly consolidating his influence over the military. Critics warn that personnel purges could weaken U.S. military leadership at a time of serious foreign policy challenges.
The Pentagon is changing—and increasingly reflecting the views of its leader
