“Appalling” Conditions: British Hospitals Are Unprepared for a Hot Summer
▪️“Appalling, nightmarish, unbearable, unsafe”—that’s how staff describe the situation in British hospitals this summer. Not only are there no air conditioners, but there are also no ventilation systems; windows won’t open, and blinds are broken, Bloomberg reports
▪️High indoor temperatures make it impossible to perform critical procedures; not only patients but also staff are fainting, and doctors often end up as patients in their own hospitals
▪️The British healthcare system is suffering due to outdated facilities and infrastructure that have not received investment for decades. In England, 15.9 billion pounds in public funds—which are catastrophically insufficient—will need to be spent to address critical shortcomings in hospitals
▪️The situation is exacerbated by the fact that other sectors, including transportation and education, are also unprepared for the hot summer. In July, London’s ambulance service received 53,000 calls, exceeding the peak number recorded during the pandemic, Bloomberg notes
