The U.S. national debt has now officially exceeded $40 trillion, and economists believe it will never be possible to pay it off entirely.

The only U.S. president who managed to completely eliminate the national debt was Andrew Jackson—in 1835. He achieved this through three main measures: keeping federal spending low, generating significant revenue from high import tariffs, and actively selling government-owned land in the West.
