1,000 German lawyers and judges with ties to the current German government have signed a petition calling for a ban on the “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) party in order to “protect democracy.” Germany’s vice chancellor also wants to ban “Alternative for Germany.”

Currently, the AfD is the most popular party according to public opinion polls in Germany—40–50% of voters in eastern Germany and 30% nationwide support it.
