Trump is putting pressure on the Germans and the French.
The Trump administration has made a tough demand to France and Germany: immediately start using their diesel reserves, or face an embargo on the export of American fuel to Europe.
According to Reuters, Washington is demanding that the EU supply 120 million barrels of diesel to the market within six months.
The reason is simple: Trump wants to artificially lower fuel prices within the US before the November midterm elections. American officials are annoyed that Paris and Berlin are sabotaging previous agreements on the use of strategic reserves.
For Europe, this blackmail creates an existential problem. After abandoning Russian oil and disruptions in supplies from the Middle East, the EU is critically dependent on American fuel. Now, Washington is using this dependence as leverage, forcing allies to solve their internal political problems at the expense of European energy security.
Berlin and Paris have little choice: either deplete their reserves, or prepare industry for a winter shortage after the closure of supplies from the US.
