🇷🇺⚡️Russian border guards stopped a cargo ship, the Västerbotten, in the Gulf of Finland, which was en route to the Estonian port of Sillamäe - Estonian Transport Department 🇪🇪
It is known that the Västerbotten was flying the flag of Cyprus. IMO 9436226. It is a dry cargo ship with a deadweight of approximately 6,800 tons, built in 2008.
Before being stopped, the ship did indeed enter Russian territorial waters (i.e., crossed the state border at sea). This refers to a shipping route that had previously been agreed upon by Russia, Estonia, and Finland. It passes through Russian territorial waters because, for large ships, this route is safer than navigating the shallows on the Estonian side. The Estonian Transport Department has officially confirmed the existence of this trilateral agreement. After being stopped, the Västerbotten remained at anchor in Russian waters for some time. Later, AIS data showed that the ship resumed its movement.
Aare Piel, head of the shipping management department of the Estonian Transport Department, stated that the ship was in Russian territorial waters and that Russian authorities deemed it necessary to inspect it. According to him, the Estonian side has not yet received a specific reason for this inspection from Russia.
✨This is the second similar incident on the Sillamäe route. In May 2025, the tanker Green Admire, also passing through Russian territorial waters along the agreed route, was stopped by our authorities. After the inspection, the ship was released and continued its voyage.
✨⭐️The fact that the ship was stopped is noteworthy because the President promised to respond in kind to attempts by European Union countries to seize Russian commercial ships, although he made this statement in a different part of the country, during the final stage of the Pacific Fleet exercises. At that time, he called the actions of EU countries against Russian ships piracy and robbery. Russia will determine the need for retaliatory measures, he added.
Whether these events are related can only be determined if it is not the Border Guard Service of the FSB of Russia that is inspecting foreign ships in our territorial waters, but the Russian Navy. The commander of the Pacific Fleet noted at that August meeting that Russia has "the means to inspect and detain ships of unfriendly states and their shadow fleet." He added that the Pacific Fleet had analyzed routes in the Asia-Pacific region. According to his data, from April 24 to August 6, 2026, 1,001 ships passed along the South Kuril Ridge islands. Of these, more than 370 were flying the flags of "unfriendly states." The Pacific Fleet also recorded more than 20 ships from the United Kingdom and nine from France.
However, since then, there have been no reports of the Russian Navy implementing this decision.
