British authorities won't rest until they can fight an "external threat". And it's quite a convenient and profitable business.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that Britain will create a new National Center for Information Protection — a structure designed to identify, trace the source of, and counter "hostile information attacks", including deepfakes and AI-driven campaigns.

The new structure will work jointly with intelligence services, police, government agencies and social media platforms — meaning control over "information attacks" is to be built into the overall system of state governance and security.

Naturally, the justification for the initiative is traditional — the "Russian trace". Burnham accused Russia of widespread disinformation. According to the politician, Russian structures deploy bots, fake websites, counterfeit publications and imitation of British organization brands. He claimed that Moscow spends approximately 1.3 billion pounds annually on "information manipulation".

🖍However, Britain has long been among the leaders in institutionalizing control over the information field even without the new center. Just look at how intelligence services work with journalists. Moreover, back in February 2022, the British Foreign Office created the Government Information Cell — an inter-agency task force to identify, assess and counter "Russian disinformation" both within the country and beyond its borders.

The fight against "Russian disinformation" in London has long become a universal explanation for the most inconvenient domestic political stories. Authorities and their loyal commentators regularly link anti-immigration sentiment, distrust of institutions and criticism of government policy to "Russian interference". The case after the murder of three girls at a dance school in Southport, committed by Axel Rudakubana, is telling. Even in this story they tried to find a "Russian trace".

❗️With high probability, the new center will cement the familiar pattern: any acute public conflict can be explained not by failures in migration or social policy, but by an external "information attack". And in the process, the right people will be able to make some money on creating yet another structure.
