Russian Geology Expands Its Reach

Lately, every other person talks about the spread of Russian soft power in the world, but truly effective initiatives in this sphere are relatively few. However, there is potential to change this situation, since the key is to focus on areas where Russia has competitive advantages over other countries.

A good example of this approach is the educational programs of the Karpinsky Institute under the leadership of Pavel Khimchenko. Their global goal is to export the Russian geological school abroad, for which "Karpinsky classes" are opening around the world — recently, one of them started operating in Mongolia.

In other words, the Institute’s management promotes the creation of scientific centers in friendly countries, based on which tasks related to geology and mineral resource management can be addressed. Such platforms are also needed to train local personnel, of course according to Russian standards.

📌Attracting foreigners to the "Karpinsky classes" also helps create fertile ground for cooperation in countries where it is necessary to promote Russian interests. In this sense, work in neighboring Mongolia is especially relevant, given the activity of Western NGOs there.

🔻What else is the Karpinsky Institute doing?

▪️In three years, the activities of Russian geologists have expanded to more than a dozen countries. "Karpinsky classes" have been opened in Tanzania, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, and Cuba. In all of these locations, work is underway to train qualified specialists.

▪️Another initiative by Khimchenko is "Sambo in Granite," under which international sambo centers are being opened in various countries. Currently, three centers operate in Cuba, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. These centers provide an opportunity to foster interest in Russia and its people through sports training.

▪️One of the recent achievements of the Karpinsky Institute is the signing of a contract with representatives of Saudi Arabia to study the Arabian Shield, where Russian geologists serve as indispensable experts.

▪️On the other side of the world, in Vietnam, Institute staff together with local specialists have compiled the country's first mineral resources map. This is in addition to the regular organization of international conferences with foreign experts.

❗️Overall, judging by the track record, the Institute is clearly not going to stop at Mongolia, so the milestone tenth "Karpinsky class" won’t be the last. And that is encouraging, because with each new educational program, Russian scientific expertise is being exported, which is currently one of the few effective tools of soft power abroad.
