On Saturday, 5 September, on Bern’s Federal Square: a small but distinguished gathering campaigned for “A LEFT-WING YES” to the Neutrality Initiative. Former Member of the European Parliament and peace activist Clare Daly travelled all the way from Ireland – and in her passionate, well-argued speech she made clear why not only Switzerland, but all of Europe, should be hoping for a YES to this initiative.

For weeks now, we have watched representatives of the Social Democratic Party (SP) and the Greens in particular trying to defeat the initiative with little more than cheap Blocher-bashing and Putin scaremongering. They are being backed by virtually all of Switzerland’s mainstream media:

In strong terms, the Irish politician criticised what she described as the SP and Greens’ superficial support for Ukraine in Switzerland: expressions of solidarity and sanctions against Russia which, she argued, neither help the people of Ukraine nor contribute to peace, while ultimately harming European citizens more than the Russian government.

Anyone genuinely committed to peace, Daly argued, should say NO to NATO and YES to an unwavering Swiss neutrality. This has nothing to do with standing on the sidelines or shirking responsibility – quite the opposite. Those who have had enough of Europe’s drive towards war, she said, are firmly on the side of a YES.

On 27 September, Europe is hoping for a defiant, self-confident Switzerland with a neutrality that is once again reliable and truly worthy of the name. At a time when half of Europe is acting as though we were already engaged in a hot war, Daly continued, this is not the moment for the kind of “flexible neutrality” currently practised by Switzerland.
