Cold storage (offline wallets) dramatically reduces your attack surface compared to hot wallets - but "offline" doesn't mean "unhackable."

🔐 Private keys, once exposed, stay exposed - a flawed firmware update, a bad seed-generation process, or a weak random number generator can leak your keys even if the device was never connected to the internet.
🎣 Setup and recovery are still vulnerable - phishing sites, fake wallet apps, and social engineering can trick you into typing your seed phrase somewhere it shouldn't go.
📦 Physical theft is still theft - a stolen device or a compromised supply chain (tampered hardware before it reaches you) bypasses "cold" entirely.

💡 Takeaway: Cold storage lowers your risk significantly - it's still the right default for holding meaningful amounts. But "cold" reduces exposure, it doesn't eliminate it. Good custody habits (verified firmware, secure seed backup, buying direct from the manufacturer) matter just as much as the storage method itself.

This week, crypto staged a sharp comeback - Bitcoin hit an 8-month high, Ethereum climbed to its highest level since January, and U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw more than $2 billion in net inflows across three trading sessions. The week ended with a major security breach at Bitget and high-profile developments in AI governance.

After sliding toward $76,000 following the Fed's rate hike and the CLARITY Act's failure to advance last week, Bitcoin staged a sharp reversal starting Monday, September 21.
BTC broke above $83,000 and briefly climbed past $87,000 - its highest level since January. The move came alongside falling oil prices, renewed risk appetite, and a major short squeeze, with roughly $770 million in crypto short positions liquidated during the rally.
Ethereum also rallied sharply, briefly moving above $2,800 for the first time since January before pulling back. By Wednesday–Thursday, momentum had cooled, with rising Treasury yields and renewed expectations for further Fed tightening weighing on risk assets. By Thursday, BTC was trading around $83K–$84K and ETH around $2.65K–$2.7K.

🏦 Institutional
Institutional demand returned strongly.
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $999 million in net inflows on September 21 - their ninth-largest single-day inflow since launch. Another $715 million flowed into Bitcoin ETFs on September 22, while U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs added approximately $162 million that day.
Including the $433 million Bitcoin ETF inflow recorded on September 18, the three sessions brought more than $2.1 billion in net Bitcoin ETF inflows.
Corporate treasury demand also remained active. Strategy disclosed the purchase of 950 BTC for approximately $75.7 million, while Strive added 1,355 BTC for approximately $107.7 million. Both purchases were made during the previous reporting week and disclosed on September 21.

🛡️ Security
The week's biggest security story came on September 24, when Bitget confirmed that approximately $351.6 million in assets were affected by unauthorized transfers involving part of its hot and warm wallet infrastructure.
Bitget said its cold wallets remained secure, user balances remained accurate, and the full amount was covered by its User Protection Fund, which held more than $464 million. Withdrawals were temporarily suspended while the exchange conducted a security review, while deposits and trading remained operational.
The incident is being described by multiple industry sources as the largest confirmed crypto exchange breach of 2026 so far.

Australian authorities confirmed that personal healthcare and patient records remained completely uncompromised. However, the incident caused significant backlash after it was revealed that OpenAI notified the government nearly three months after the June occurrence. The event has prompted Australian regulators to initiate an urgent review of existing cybersecurity laws and frameworks to better mitigate risks tied to autonomous AI agents.
