Khabib Nurmagomedov grew up in Sildi, Dagestan, wanted to play soccer, and started wrestling at eight in a gym his father built downstairs. He retired 29–0 after beating Justin Gaethje, months after his father died. His teammate Islam Makhachev now holds the UFC welterweight title and the pound-for-pound top spot.

A village of a few hundred. A living-room gym. A wrestling bear at nine. Khabib went 13–0 in the UFC, won the lightweight title, and retired undefeated in 2020. He now corners Islam Makhachev, the current UFC welterweight champion.
