🇺🇸🇨🇳 US Tightens Restrictions on Chinese Data Center Equipment as AI Rivalry Deepens

The United States is expanding its technology restrictions on China beyond advanced AI chips, targeting data center equipment and critical components as competition over artificial intelligence intensifies.

A recent executive order signed by President Donald Trump restricts certain foreign-made grid equipment, including transformers and high-voltage circuit breakers, linked to China and other countries. Meanwhile, four US senators have introduced legislation seeking to prevent federal agencies from purchasing Chinese optical transceivers used in AI data centers.

The measures come as Beijing also tightens controls surrounding its AI sector, including reported restrictions on overseas travel by families of top AI talent. Despite the tensions, Washington and Beijing have agreed to maintain dialogue on AI-related risks.
