The Supreme Court has directed the Centre, States and UTs to collect detailed financial, fee, admission and administrative data from private universities and colleges.

In Ayesha Jain v. Amity University, Noida, the case began over the university’s handling of Jain’s name change in its records and its academic consequences, before expanding into broader issues concerning private universities.

The Court ruled: “No private university shall be allowed to be run as a profit-making institution,” saying surplus funds must support institutional needs and staff, not governing-board members.
