US lawmakers oppose regime’s bid to replace Myanmar’s UN ambassador
October 15, 2026
Six US lawmakers have sent a letter to US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz, urging him to block the Myanmar regime’s attempt to replace Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun with its representative at the UN General Assembly.
The lawmakers urged Waltz to support the continued presence of Kyaw Moe Tun, who was appointed by Myanmar’s ousted, democratically elected civilian government, and to maintain the post-2021 deferral of the credentials dispute. They cited the junta-organized election, which they said lacked legitimacy and was held amid armed conflict, mass displacement, the imprisonment of democratic opponents and the exclusion of the main opposition parties.
The lawmakers warned that allowing the military junta to occupy Myanmar’s UN seat would violate the world body’s fundamental principles and embolden the regime’s ongoing human rights violations.
