Myanmar expats in US protest Malaysia’s welcoming of coup leader

October 16, 2026

Myanmar expats staged a protest in front of the Malaysian Embassy in Washington on Thursday, objecting to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations member state hosting Myanmar coup leader Min Aung Hlaing earlier this month.

Protesters delivered an open letter urging the Malaysian government to help Myanmar nationals instead of deporting them, and not to give legitimacy to the “terrorist Min Aung Hlaing,” Dr. Tun Wai, who participated in the protest, told The Irrawaddy.
