– Lots are sold only when there is demand, gradually pushing the floor price up

This way, no excess supply is created that would later drag the market down. And in moments of hype, the auction price naturally rises to the level that two or more participants are willing to pay.
The auction itself is blind: the highest bidder wins, but pays the price of the second-highest bid — lower than their own.
