📡 What is an indexer in TON?

⚫️ Blockchain is often described as an open database, but that wording can be a little misleading. Yes, all transactions are public. But if you open a raw block, you will not see a neat table with every wallet’s balance, its latest swaps, or the NFTs it has bought. What you get is a stream of technical data that still needs to be parsed.

⚫️ That is what an indexer is for. It constantly monitors the blockchain, pulls the relevant events from blocks, and stores them in a more readable database. In simple terms, it turns “everything that happened in TON” into a format that can answer specific product-related questions.

⚫️ For example, Gram Wallet uses an indexer to show transfer history, DeDust uses one to display the latest trades in a pool, and Getgems uses it to understand which NFTs belong to a user. Most users barely notice indexers when everything works, but they become obvious the moment something breaks: a balance stops updating, a chart gets stuck, or a swap fails to go through.

⚫️ Indexers rarely get discussed on their own, even though they play a major role in product quality. So the next time your wallet instantly shows your transfer history, remember the indexer working behind it.
