Jewish settlers set fire to a mosque and spray-painted its exterior walls in the occupied West Bank village of Mukhmas on Wednesday.

Atta Kanaan, a Mukhmas resident who lives 50 meters from the mosque, told AFP he heard glass breaking shortly after midnight and immediately rushed to the building.

“A fire was burning fiercely, and we called the fire brigade. Young men rushed to help us with fire extinguishers, and we managed to contain part of the fire before the flames engulfed the entire mosque,” he said.

An AFP journalist reported that Hebrew slogans had been spray-painted on the building’s exterior, including the phrase “just because we are quiet doesn’t mean we are asleep.”
