US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that Washington may have gone too far in targeting Iran’s leadership, saying the killings have complicated efforts to identify Iranian officials with whom the US can negotiate.

Speaking at a recent campaign rally in Youngstown, Ohio, Trump said, "We might have gone too far with the leaders because we don’t know who the hell we’re dealing with any more." He added that Washington was struggling to determine whom to engage.

"Nobody wants to be the president of Iran," Trump claimed, suggesting potential candidates were unwilling to assume the position.

His remarks came despite Masoud Pezeshkian having served as president of the Islamic Republic since July 2024.

Trump’s comments underscore the difficulty the US faces in pursuing negotiations while its military aggression targets Iranian leadership, raising questions about how the US expects to secure an agreement while continuing to kill senior officials.
