❗️Germany’s Merz says government will oppose efforts to 'question Israel's right to exist'

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reaffirmed Berlin's support for Israel on Wednesday while calling for the establishment of a 'Palestinian state' as part of a two-state solution, which he described as the best path toward 'peace and security' in the region.

In a written statement marking the anniversary of the 7 October 2023, Merz said Germany "stands for the security and existence of Israel," framing this position as part of the country's identity following the Holocaust.

Merz also called for a political settlement that would allow Israelis, Palestinians and neighboring states to live in 'peace and security,' while saying that Berlin would oppose efforts to "relativize or question Israel's right to exist" and pledged to act against antisemitic incidents and attacks.
