US President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and suspend regional fighting within seven days, and has told aides he expects US bombing to resume after November’s congressional elections, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing unnamed US officials.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said at the UN on Friday that Tehran had delivered its proposal to Washington through Qatari mediators. Under the plan, an agreement would set a seven-day countdown for reopening the strait and pausing fighting across the region.

"If there is seriousness on the US side to come to a deal and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, everything is now prepared," Araghchi said.

A US official told Reuters that Washington and Tehran were engaged in "positive and constructive discussions through the mediators," but the Journal reported that Trump privately remained doubtful Iran would meet his demands.

According to the Journal, Trump has told staff that he expects a renewed US bombing campaign to be likely.
