❗️Gulf states push for new security framework with Iran after war exposes regional vulnerability

Gulf Arab states are calling for a fundamental reset in relations with Iran after the US-Israeli war exposed their vulnerability to Iranian attacks and undermined confidence in Washington as the region's security guarantor, the Financial Times reported on 21 September.

Speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani described the war as a "wake-up call," saying Gulf states must "act together responsibly" and maintain good relations with Tehran. He argued that lasting regional stability requires a security framework bringing Gulf states and Iran together to ensure that neither side poses a threat to the other.

The UAE echoed that position, with presidential adviser Anwar Gargash calling for a "new mindset" in dealing with Iran and saying dialogue should take place not only between Washington and Tehran but also directly between Iran and its Arab neighbors. According to the Financial Times, Saudi Arabia has also discussed the idea of a regional non-aggression pact with Iran as Gulf capitals increasingly conclude they must take greater responsibility for their own security rather than relying solely on US protection.

The shift comes as Saudi Arabia faces renewed defensive operations by Ansarallah in Yemen, while US President Donald Trump has so far resisted Saudi requests for direct US military strikes against the group. The Financial Times also reported that the UK has agreed to provide defensive aerial refueling support to Saudi Arabia, marking a limited expansion of British involvement in the war.

Gulf leaders remain concerned by Tehran's demonstrated ability to strike across the region and disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
