This is a polyclad flatworm, a type of marine flatworm from the order Polycladida.

Its glass-like, translucent body reveals a striking tree-like network of highly branched digestive structures running throughout its body. These structures help distribute digested material, since flatworms lack a specialized circulatory system.

It lives on the seafloor and can glide across surfaces using tiny cilia and muscular movements, creating its graceful, rippling motion.

A tree with just six known wild individuals left is being cloned to help prevent it from disappearing forever.

The Mongarlowe mallee (Eucalyptus recurva), found in southeastern Australia, is one of the world’s rarest eucalypts.

Its largest known individual has a woody underground structure called a lignotuber estimated to be 3,000–6,000 years old.

The six surviving wild individuals are widely separated, making cross-pollination extremely difficult and there are currently no wild seeds available.

Conservationists at the Australian National Botanic Gardens are therefore creating genetic copies by grafting cuttings from the wild trees onto rootstock.

So far, they have successfully produced multiple copies of four of the six wild individuals, creating an “insurance population” outside the wild.

The ultimate goal is to get the plants flowering, carefully pollinate them and produce genetically pure, viable seeds that could eventually help rebuild the population.

The challenge? The species can take up to 20 years to flower.

For now, these tiny nursery-grown trees may be one of the best chances of keeping an ancient species alive.

Owl feathers can glow pink or magenta under ultraviolet (UV) light.

The glow comes from porphyrins, pigments naturally present in some owl feathers. When exposed to UV light, these pigments fluoresce, producing a striking pink or reddish glow.

As feathers age and wear, their porphyrins gradually break down, causing the intensity of their fluorescence to decrease. Researchers can use these differences to identify newly grown feathers and distinguish different generations of feathers across an owl’s wing.

These fluorescence patterns can also provide clues about a bird’s age by revealing its molt history.

This is a firefly larva. Fireflies spend most of their lives beneath leaf litter and in the soil.
Most species remain in the larval stage for one to two years before emerging as adults, which typically live only a few weeks.
