Military authorities have informed UKMTO that a tanker conducting an inbound transit was struck by an unknown projectile. Two crew have sustained minor injuries and the vessel is reported to be continuing to its next port of call under its own power. There is no reported environmental impact at this time. Authorities are investigating.

Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO.

Die Linke has finished first in Berlin’s state election, according to evening projections, taking about 25–25.5% of the vote and gaining more than 13 points. The CDU fell to about 20%. The Greens and AfD are clustered in the mid-teens; the SPD dropped to a historic low near 12%.

Spitzenkandidatin Elif Eralp, a 45-year-old lawyer of Turkish origin, now has a path to the Rotes Rathaus. If coalition partners install her as governing mayor, she would be Berlin’s first Turkish-origin city leader, the first female state premier in Germany with a migration background, and the first Linke politician to run the capital. That outcome is not automatic. The mayor is chosen by parliament, not by first place on election night.

Housing defined the campaign. About 85% of Berlin households rent, and advertised rents have roughly doubled since 2014. Eralp’s central pledge is to implement the 2021 referendum and bring some 220,000–240,000 apartments owned by large private landlords into public ownership. Cost estimates for compensation range from about €7 billion to more than €30 billion. Berlin’s last rent-cap experiment was struck down by Germany’s Constitutional Court.

Her campaign drew comparisons to New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Eralp said the campaigns exchanged ideas; a Mamdani strategist advised her team in the spring. Media have labeled her “Berlin’s Mamdani.”

Two blocs remain mathematically viable: Linke–Greens–SPD, or CDU–Greens–SPD. Eralp has already said she would insist on socialization in any coalition she leads. That demand is the main obstacle. A first-place finish is not a governing majority, and Berlin’s next government will be decided in talks, not by the slogan that won the night.

#BREAKING | 🇩🇪 — Germany: Right-wing AfD projected strongest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern; CDU collapses to ~5%

Projections from Sunday’s state election show the AfD as the largest party in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with about 37–38% of the vote — more than doubling its 2021 result.

The SPD of Minister-President Manuela Schwesig is running a close second at around 36%. Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU is projected at roughly 5.1–5.3%, its worst result in a German state election in the postwar era and close to the 5% threshold for entering the state parliament.

Merz called the outcome a “disaster,” saying the CDU had been “ground down” in the contest between the SPD and AfD. He said he would remain chancellor and party leader and press ahead with reforms.

Turnout is estimated at about 78–79%, well above 2021. Other parties have ruled out a coalition with the AfD, so Schwesig is widely expected to remain in office at the head of a non-AfD government. Final official results are still pending.
