🇨🇱 The Chilean Meteorological Service (DMC) confirmed on Saturday that the beginning of October saw record rainfall in Santiago and Valparaíso. The storm affecting the south-central part of the country is driven by the El Niño phenomenon, which has swept through ten regions of South America, resulting in at least 16 deaths and more than 3,000 people displaced so far this year.
🌧️ The heavy rains caused an unprecedented flash flood in the foothills of San Carlos de Apoquindo, leaving six people injured and more than 2,000 homes affected. Weather stations, such as the one in Viña del Mar, recorded 125.2 millimeters of rainfall, tripling their previous all-time records.
🌊 Authorities attribute this excess rainfall to regional climate variability, while mitigation efforts continue in response to overflowing waterways and collapsed infrastructure.
