Take a look at the paragraph explaining this year's WTD on the website of UN Tourism:
"Tourism has always evolved through innovation, and Artificial Intelligence is set to become its next major transformation. World Tourism Day 2026 will explore how AI can help create smarter, more inclusive and sustainable tourism by enhancing decision-making, strengthening skills, and improving the way destinations are experienced and managed."
While it is obvious the use of Artificial Intelligence in tourism has a number of benefits, an overly positive and uncritically optimistic bias toward both AI and tourism itself can nevertheless be problematic. A balanced perspective requires us to consider both the positive and negative aspects and to acknowledge both the opportunities and the potential risks.Unfortunately, even at the level of the UN’s tourism agency, insufficient attention has been paid to the potential negative aspects. In the paragraph above, there is not even a single word about the potential threats posed by Artificial Intelligence.
Looks more like propaganda, recalling the organization’s historical name, the International Union of Official Tourist Propaganda Organizations. Of course, arguably the term at the time did not necessarily carry the negative connotations it has today.
From an agency of the UN which ought to represent the collective wisdom of the member states, one would expect a more balanced and comprehensive perspective—one that recognizes not only the opportunities offered by AI but also its potential risks and unintended consequences.
