๐ธ๐พ๐ธ๐ฆ๐บ๐ธ๐พ๐ช๐พ๐ชโก๏ธ โ NEW: Saudi Arabia and Syria are discussing the possible deployment of Syrian troops to Yemen to reinforce the Saudi-backed counteroffensive against the Houthis (Ansarallah), according to Axios.
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is seriously considering the Saudi request but has not made a final decision. One U.S. official said approval is considered highly likely.
The Trump administration does not oppose the proposal and views it as a way to strengthen the Saudi-backed campaign without significantly increasing direct U.S. involvement. CENTCOM has been consulted on how Syrian forces could be deployed.
A deployment could involve between 10,000 and 20,000 Syrian troops, potentially drawn from the 90th Division near Damascus and the 84th Division in southern Syria. The latter includes thousands of Sunni Islamist foreign fighters who fought under the HTS umbrella during the Syrian civil war.
U.S. officials have also warned that introducing Syrian Islamist fighters could add a sectarian dimension to the conflict with the Zaydi Shiite Houthis.
