Canonical joins the Open Secure AI Alliance

Canonical recently joined the Linux Foundation’s Open Secure AI Alliance to help make open-source security tools for AI systems and autonomous agents. The alliance formed in July 2026 in response to the security breach at Hugging Face, when OpenAI models undergoing a safety test broke out of their sandbox to access Hugging Face’s systems – aided by config errors rather than super-intelligence. Commercial AI models refused to help in assessing attack logs due to their guardrails, so Hugging Face engineers had to run an open-weight model on their own infrastructure to complete their analysis – and underscore the need for […]

📰 My Raspberry Pi 5 paid for itself in less than a year thanks to Docker containers, but that's almost impossible now

Having spent a lot of time with the Raspberry Pi 4 and Zero, I was beyond ecstatic when the fifth iteration of this uber-popular single-board computer hit the shelves. After all, this tiny gizmo packs a better CPU (and GPU) than its predecessor, making it better than the RPi 4 for projects where I need more computational prowess. On top of that, it has an onboard power connector and a PCIe 2.0 slot that I’d wanted on this SBC family for years.

Meta reportedly rolls out Muse Spark 1.3 for coding and agentic workloads

Meta is reportedly rolling out Muse Spark 1.3 through Muse Code and the Meta Model API, promising major gains in coding and agentic performance without raising the price from Spark 1.2. However, publicly detailed Meta material still centers on Muse Spark 1.2, so administrators should verify that 1.3 is available in their region and API account before changing production workloads.

GitSpawn lets poisoned repositories run code through AI coding agents

A repository’s own `.git/config` can still trigger attacker-controlled code through Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, goose, and other AI coding agents before trust prompts, authentication, model calls, or tool approvals occur. Manifold Security’s GitSpawn research found eight flaws across seven agents; fixes are available for several tools, but Hermes Agent, Qwen Code, Grok Build, and a second Claude Code path remained vulnerable during September testing.

LibreOffice broke a download record with its latest release

LibreOffice 26.8 was download more than 1 million times in its first week of release, which The Document Foundation say is the highest first-week figure of any release of the free office suite. Released on 26 August, LibreOffice 26.8 saw 1,031,162 downloads from the official website, which provides installers for Windows, macOS and Linux, during the first seven days. As many Linux users update via other sources, like the Snap Store, Flathub and PPAs, the real figure will be even higher than that. “This is the highest number of downloads in the first week of any LibreOffice release”, The Document […]

OpenAI’s Astra reaches “critical” cyber capability threshold

OpenAI says its unreleased Astra model is the first of its systems to reach the “Critical” cybersecurity level, meaning it can autonomously discover unknown vulnerabilities and chain them into attacks against hardened environments. The designation has already changed Astra’s rollout: parts of training were paused, safeguards were strengthened, and advanced cyber capabilities will initially be restricted to selected testers and the Daybreak Blue defensive program. Astra is expected soon, but no public release date has been confirmed.

Microsoft offers workshop for incident response plans

Microsoft is offering organizations a two- or three-day Cybersecurity Incident Response Workshop to test whether their incident response plans work under pressure—not just on paper. Led by Microsoft’s Detection and Response Team (DART), the exercise uses simulated attacks, threat hunting, and guided decisions to expose gaps in roles, tools, telemetry, and coordination before a real breach does.
