vSphere 8 support ends in 2027—plan for a costly platform decision now

VMware vSphere 8 customers have until October 11, 2027, to escape a forced platform and licensing change. After that date, bug fixes, security patches, and perpetual licensing end, leaving organizations to choose between VMware Cloud Foundation 9, vSphere Foundation 9, or a migration to another virtualization platform.

Chrome 152

📰 Wayland Found To Be "Intrinsically Faster Than X11, But Not Necessarily More Efficient"

The PorteuX Linux distribution focused on being a high performance, modular, and minimalist distro took to forking Xfce's xfwm4 window manager into "xfwm4-gl" for OpenGL compositing support. As part of that they developed a window manager / compositor benchmark for evaluating the performance and efficiency of typical operations. Their results are fascinating...

Z.AI confirms Ox Alpha after stealth launch overtakes DeepSeek

China’s Z.AI has confirmed that its anonymously launched Ox Alpha model is a new GLM-series system after it rapidly became OpenRouter’s most-used model. The free reasoning model reportedly more than doubled DeepSeek’s usage, and Z.AI plans to publish its weights, enabling developers to run and adapt the model in their own AI applications.

LibreOffice 26.8 released with paragraph layout changes, draft view + more

The Document Foundation has released LibreOffice 26.8, a new version of its open-source office suite for Windows, macOS and Linux. Among the changes is a new Paragraph Composer, which improves the way Writer handles justified text. In many word processors, justified text gets stretched to create a straight edge on both sides of the page, but this has often looked uneven. Some lines packed tight, others gappy. LibreOffice 26.8’s new composer allows spacing to be balanced several lines at once rather than one at a time, which leads to a better look: Other typography changes in LibreOffice 26.8 include native support for […]

SLEEPWALKER backdoor hides in ESET agent and wakes on a crafted packet

A newly documented Windows backdoor named SLEEPWALKER can remain inactive in memory until it receives a specially formed network packet, then execute commands through a private 23-instruction bytecode. The 59,904-byte unsigned DLL impersonates Microsoft’s `dpapi.dll` while side-loading through ESET Management Agent, but no victim, campaign, or threat actor has been confirmed.

A hidden Ubuntu feature I use to tidy up my desktop

Ubuntu’s Desktop Icons NG (DING) extension has a little-known way to bring order to a chaotic desktop: stacks. Stacks groups multiple files of the same type into a collapsible icon. Images in one stack, PDFs in another and so on. Folders aren’t grouped, and your files don’t get moved anywhere; this is visual grouping, not relocating. If there is only one of a type of file on the desktop, it is not stacked. Expanding a stack by clicking on it reveals all files in the stack (other file icons bump out of the way). Multiple stacks can be expanded or […]

‍Gram 3.3.0

Cerebras CS-5 targets 10,000 tokens per second as CS-4 goes rack-scale

Cerebras is turning its wafer-scale processors into a reusable datacenter platform with the CS-4 Nexus rack, while setting a 2027 target of up to 10,000 output tokens per second per user for CS-5. The design could let operators upgrade compute without replacing the rack’s power, cooling, and I/O infrastructure, although the most ambitious performance figures remain projections.

Microsoft Marketplace rolls out AI-powered discovery worldwide

Microsoft has made Intelligent Discovery in Microsoft Marketplace generally available worldwide, giving customers a conversational way to find, compare, and evaluate cloud, AI, and agent solutions. Instead of starting with a product name or keyword, buyers can describe a business problem in natural language; Microsoft says preview users were 68% more likely to find a suitable solution and proceed toward purchase.

Linux
