Berlin – The Left Party, the Greens, and the SPD aim to expropriate housing
Contrary to previous discussions, the threshold for the transfer of private housing stocks is set to be 10,000 units. This would mean the expropriation of the corporations Vonovia, Heimstaden, Covivio, Alder, and likely DVI. While this involves fewer units than originally envisioned in the public referendum, it still amounts to approximately 160,000 apartments—nearly 10 percent of the total housing stock in Berlin.
The plan also includes capping compensation payments at 16 billion euros—without placing a burden on the public budget—and ensuring that housing built from 2021 onwards remains exempt from socialization. According to Krach, this serves as a signal that anyone wishing to build in Berlin is welcome.
