On 17 October 1781, during the Siege of Yorktown, a British drummer boy received orders to beat a shot, calling fornegotiations. No one knows the boy's name, or where he stood when the guns fell silent, or when he started beating the drum. A British officer followed, waving a white scarf that signaled the end of the Battle of Yorktown.
