On November 5, 1934, he joined the Austrian BH, was assigned to the 4th/Alpine Hunter Battalion 3, later he joined the 16th Infantry Regiment, where he became a private and corporal. After joining the WH, he joined the 6th/Mountain Hunter Regiment 137 in August 1938, becoming a senior hunter (non-commissioned officer) in October 1938. He served with the Regiment in Poland as a group and platoon leader. In May 1940, he took part in a crash course for paratroopers, and was deployed over Narvik on May 22, 1940.
He remained stationed in the north and fought with the GJR 137 in Lapland, became a sergeant in July 40, a senior sergeant in May 41 and was wounded on June 29, 1941 by a shot to the hip and forearm when he prevented the Titova bridge from being blown up despite heavy fire. After he had half-recovered from his wounds with his troops' baggage train, he led a raiding party to clear Hill 262.2 on August 2, eliminating a flank threat to his regiment.
At the end of August 41, he led several raiding and reconnaissance operations against the "Steinplattenhöhe" on the Liza front. On August 30, he was seriously wounded in the head in close combat and evacuated home.
After various stays in hospitals, he came to Freising in May 1943 for a course for professional non-commissioned officers with brain injuries and then to the Grenadier Replacement Battalion 19. He was promoted to lieutenant on January 1, 1944, and was transferred to the command reserve of the Grenadier Replacement Battalion 19 on February 29, 1944 and was not deployed again until the end of the war.
