Closing words of the defendant Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel (22 September 1882 – murdered 16 October 1946) before the "International War Crimes Tribunal" in Nuremberg on August 31, 1946. 3/3
May the High Court recognize my judgment from these two answers. I believed that I was wrong and was not able to prevent what should have been prevented. That is my fault.
It is tragic to have to realize that the best thing I had to give as a soldier, obedience and loyalty, was exploited for unknown purposes and that I did not see that there are limits to the fulfillment of a soldier's duty. That is my fate. May the clear recognition of the causes, the disastrous methods and the terrible consequences of this war for the German people give rise to hope for a new future in the community of nations."
