The Marshall Plan Myth: How the Americans hamstrung the German economy
April 3, 1948: US President Harry S. Truman signs the European Recovery Program developed by Secretary of State George C. Marshall for the reconstruction of Western Europe after the Second World War. The program is given the popular name Marshall Plan after its developer.
The Marshall Plan is the initial spark of the West German economic miracle - that's what we learned in school. Whether it's the Greek crisis, the Middle East conflict or hunger in Africa - people are always quick to talk about the need for a "Marshall Plan". 70 years after its invention, the legendary economic stimulus program appears to be the model for efficient economic aid. But is that really true?
The Marshall Plan is great extra mythology.
In fact, not one dollar flows into Germany. The Marshall Plan is primarily an economic stimulus program for ailing US agriculture, accompanied by one of the largest PR campaigns in history. The German economy, in turn, is much less destroyed than we believe today - the Germans are essentially paying for its own reconstruction.
