This week, I joined over 450 Sheriffs from across the country at their national conference here in Washington. It was my honor to thank them in person for their dedicated service to protecting our communities.

We are saddened by the loss of 5 U.S. Marines following a helicopter crash in California.

We are praying for their families as they mourn the loss of these American heroes. Their service and dedication to this great nation will never be forgotten.

Senate Republicans did the right thing by rejecting supplemental national security legislation that would not actually secure the border.

I declared it would be dead on arrival in the House, and credit Senate Republicans for ensuring it was never sent over.

Let me be clear, as I have been all along: National security begins by securing our own border. The House, and the American people, insist upon it.

Another 1 million encounters at the southern border since the start of the fiscal year. This is a new record, and the earliest we’ve hit this terrible threshold. Under President Biden, the catastrophe he created grows worse, and the danger and chaos at the border continues to harm America.

He must immediately use his executive authority to take action now.

I’ve seen enough. This bill is even worse than we expected, and won’t come close to ending the border catastrophe the President has created. As the lead Democrat negotiator proclaimed: Under this legislation, “the border never closes.”

Democrats are refusing to take the border catastrophe and its affects seriously.
 
This week, the majority of House Democrats opposed commonsense legislation that:
•Deports illegal immigrants
convicted of Social Security fraud
•Deports illegal immigrants convicted of DUIs
•Imposes criminal and immigration penalties against illegal immigrants who flee Border Patrol by car

House Republicans will continue to take action to make Americans and their communities safer

In December 2022, Border Patrol Agent Raul Gonzalez Jr. was killed pursing a group of illegal immigrants in a high-speed chase. 

Today the House voted to pass the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act which would impose criminal and immigration penalties against any illegal immigrant who intentionally evades a federal officer while driving.  The House stands shoulder-to-shoulder with every law enforcement officer working to secure the border.

President Biden said  “I’ve done all I can do” with executive authority to secure the border. That is simply untrue. He’s either lying or misinformed.

Earlier today, I had a productive phone call with Governor @Greg_Abbott to discuss the ongoing crisis at the border.

Both Texas and the federal government have a responsibility to protect the health and safety of their people.

The Biden administration has failed to do so. While we fight for the federal government to do its job, the House expects that the Biden administration will not interfere as Texas fulfills its responsibilities.

Any border "shutdown" authority that ALLOWS even one illegal crossing is a non-starter. Thousands each day is outrageous. The number must be ZERO.

My statement on President Biden's endorsement of the Senate border deal:

President Biden falsely claimed yesterday he needs Congress to pass a new law to allow him to close the southern border, but he knows that is untrue.

As I explained to him in a letter late last year, and have specifically reiterated to him on multiple occasions since, he can and must take executive action immediately to reverse the catastrophe he has created.

The Immigration and Nationality Act coupled with recent Supreme Court precedent give him ‘ample authority’ to ‘suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.’

As my letter stated, President Biden can begin to secure the border by ending catch-and-release, ceasing exploitation of parole authority, reinstating the Remain in Mexico program, expanding the use of expedited removal authority, and renewing construction of the border wall. The President must start by using the broad legal authority he already possesses to reclaim our nation's sovereignty and end the mass release of illegal aliens into our country.

According to reports, the Senate's pending proposal would expressly allow as many as 150,000 illegal crossings each month (1.8 million per year) before any new ‘shutdown’ authority could be used. At that point, America will have already been surrendered.
