Happy Pride Month! As we celebrate this historically meaningful and empowering season, we are especially honored to announce that Professor Tang Ling from Melbourne University, United Proud Womxn (UPW) esteemed advisor, will deliver their first ever book talk on their recently released book Burnout Market Feminism.
唐凌 Ling Tang (they/she) is a lecturer in cultural studies at the University of Melbourne. They research and create progressive practices in the market in post-socialist China. As an activist-artist-academic, they promote feminism, queerness, and inclusive Chineseness through research, teaching, art-making, and social engagement.
Their book, Burnout Market Feminism: Urban Chinese Businesswomen in the Internet Age (MIT Press, 2026), proposes the concept of “burnout market feminism” to explain how certain forms of market feminism may offer genuine empowerment, while the individualist logic of neoliberalism and the collectivist demands of nationalism under authoritarian governance ultimately channel that empowerment into a narrow path of exhaustion and burnout. The book creates a landscape of identities - successful Taobao business women, Shenzhen neo-liberal same-sex women couple, Hefei women navigating new Guanxi configured around power and exploring extramarital relationships, thus surface new conditions of thought, and generate new queer potential.
