The bat’s ability to protect against the evil eye is explained by the animal’s blindness: its eyesight is indeed poorly developed. Macedonians in Gevgelija sew a bat’s wing or head into their clothing and wear it as an amulet. It is believed that, just as a bat cannot see anything during the day, the evil eye will not be able to see or cast its spell on a person carrying a bat. The same practice is found in Bulgaria. In Russia, bats are also used for protection against the evil eye.
