In Slavic folk tradition, the pike plays an important role not only as a fish but also as a creature with mythological properties. According to a widespread belief, the instruments used to torment Christ are imprinted on the pike’s forehead: the cross, the spear, and others (Lesser Poland, Płock Governorate, Moravia, Croatia). This makes the pike a special fish that Jews do not eat out of respect. In addition, Belarusians believe that the pike always keeps its head turned toward the sun (Vitebsk Region).
The pike is also associated with magical practices. Ukrainians in Voronezh Governorate use a cross-shaped pike bone in beekeeping: they place pikes beneath the consecrated Easter bread, grind the forehead bone into powder, and mix it with honey to feed the bees.
