Stanford researchers used AI to design 16 working viruses that infect, replicate, and kill bacteria.

These were not just simulations. They were physically built, and some outperformed natural phages.

This particular study used bacteriophages, not human pathogens, but the key fact is that AI can now generate functional viral genomes at speed.

Technology like this has the potential to make gain-of-function research faster, cheaper, and far more dangerous.
