🤔Why People Sometimes Resist Useful Advice (B2)
Перевод и тест на понимание: https://langformula.ru/why-people-sometimes-resist-useful-advice/

People often receive advice that could help them, yet they do not always follow it. A friend may suggest a healthier routine, a colleague may recommend a better way to work, or a doctor may explain an important change. Even when advice is reasonable, people can resist it for psychological and social reasons.

One reason is that advice can feel like a threat to independence. Most people want to believe that they control their own decisions. When someone tells them what they should do, they may feel pushed or judged. As a result, they may reject the suggestion to protect their sense of freedom. This can happen even when they privately agree.

The way advice is given also matters. A helpful idea may be ignored if it sounds critical or disrespectful. People are usually more open when the speaker shows understanding and explains the suggestion without attacking them. Timing is important too. Someone who is tired, embarrassed, or under pressure may not be ready to listen.

Past experience can also create resistance. If people followed similar advice before and it did not help, they may become doubtful. They may also hear too much advice from different people. When everyone gives a different opinion, it becomes difficult to know whom to trust.

Another factor is the cost of change. Useful advice often requires effort. It may mean changing a habit, spending money, admitting a mistake, or accepting short-term discomfort. Knowing that something is helpful does not make change easy. A person may understand that exercise is good but still dislike the effort needed to build a routine.

Identity can also play a role. Some advice challenges the way people see themselves. A person who believes they are good with money may resist budgeting advice because accepting it feels like admitting weakness. Someone who sees themselves as independent may dislike asking for help.

People are more likely to accept advice when they feel respected and involved in the decision. Asking questions, offering options, and explaining reasons can work better than giving orders. Small, realistic changes can also feel easier to accept.

Resisting useful advice is not always irrational. It can come from a need for independence, fear of judgment, past experience, or the difficulty of change. Understanding these reasons can make advice easier to give and easier to receive.
