One reason is that people do not notice everything. During an event, attention is limited. A person may focus on one speaker or one surprising detail and miss other information. Someone nearby may notice different things. Later, both people are working with different pieces of information from the beginning.
Emotions also influence memory. Events connected with fear, excitement, embarrassment, or anger can feel especially strong. However, strong feelings do not guarantee perfect accuracy. A frightened person may remember the danger but confuse the order of events or forget smaller details. A calmer person may remember practical information but less of the emotional atmosphere.
Expectations can shape memory too. If someone believes that a colleague is unfriendly, they may pay more attention to a rude comment and forget polite ones. A person with a different opinion may remember the interaction more positively. Existing beliefs can influence which details seem important enough to keep.
Memory also changes after an event. People talk to friends, see photographs, and hear other people’s versions of what happened. New information can become mixed with the original memory. After hearing the same story several times, a person may become unsure whether a detail came from personal experience or from someone else’s description.
Time creates another problem. Memories are often rebuilt rather than simply replayed. As details disappear, the mind may fill gaps with information that seems logical. This usually happens without conscious intention. A person may honestly feel certain about a detail that was added later.
Because of these effects, disagreements about memory should be handled carefully. It is useful to compare several accounts, check written records or photographs when available, and separate confidence from accuracy. Someone who sounds very certain is not necessarily more correct.
Remembering an event differently is a normal part of human memory. Memory helps people make sense of experience, but it is not a perfect copy of the past. Understanding this can make people more careful about their own memories and more open to another person’s different memory of the same event.
