🇷🇺🌋 On October 17, the spectacular city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky celebrates its 286th anniversary. Founded in 1740 by the famous explorer #VitusBering, the city was named after his expedition's two ships: the St.Peter and the St.Paul.
🏞 Today, it serves as the capital of Kamchatka Krai, beautifully positioned on the shores of Avacha Bay – one of the largest and most scenic natural harbours in the world.
⛵️ Over the centuries, the settlement grew from a remote outpost into a vital Far Eastern port, officially gaining city status in 1822. In 1924, it was renamed Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to differentiate it from a similar city name in Kazakhstan, and it later served as a crucial commercial port during World War II. Its historic heart beautifully preserves early 20th-century architecture, monuments to its founders and the solemn Nikolskaya Sopka memorial.
📈 Today, this vibrant hub houses more than half of Kamchatka's population and drives 80% of the region's industrial production. Beyond its cultural highlights, like the Institute of Volcanology Museum, the city serves as the ultimate gateway to wild natural wonders – majestic active volcanoes, shooting geysers, rich marine life and the famous Kamchatka brown bears.
