🛰✨ #OTD in 1926, legendary Soviet engineer #GlebMaksimov was born. While less famous than Sergei Korolev, he was the mastermind who physically designed Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial satellite launched in 1957. His brilliant mind quickly expanded beyond Earth's orbit, proving instrumental in crafting the pioneering Venera 1 and Mars 1 planetary probes.
G.Maximov’s most ambitious dream was mapping a human mission to Mars. Leading a specialized unit within the OKB-1 bureau, he spearheaded the TMK-1 project – a detailed blueprint for a three-man crewed Mars flyby. The plans were so detailed that engineers even set a launch date for 8 June 1971, with the crew scheduled to return on 10 July 1974 after a three-year journey.
🌕 🌌 By 1962, G.Maximov’s unit pivoted toward the #Moon, driving research for the E-6 robotic lunar landing program. From drafting the 58-centimetre sphere that started the Space Age to plotting humanity's first path to Mars, he was a true architect of the cosmos.
