🎖 Today marks the 131st anniversary of the birth of #AlexanderVasilevsky, a prominent Soviet military commander, Marshal of the Soviet Union and twice Hero of the Soviet Union. He began his military career during World War I, though he initially had no intentions of joining the military; by his own account, he aspired to become an agronomist and work in a remote corner of Russia after the war. Instead, destiny intervened, and he went on to participate in both the Russian Civil War and the Soviet-Polish War between 1917 and 1922.

Serving as the Chief of the General Staff from 1942 to 1945, Vasilevsky became central to the Soviet war effort during World War II. He was directly involved in planning and coordinating nearly all the decisive Soviet strategic offensives, ranging from the pivotal Stalingrad counter-offensive in November 1942 to the lightning-fast Manchurian strategic offensive operation in August 1945 against Japan.

✨ His brilliance on the battlefield made Vasilevsky one of the most decorated commanders in Soviet military history. He was twice awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union – recognizing his exceptional leadership on both the Western Front against Nazi Germany and the Eastern front against Imperial Japan.
